Employee Free Choice Act

YMCA leaders from across the nation converged on the Nation's Capitol today as the YMCA of the USA's annual Advocacy Days kicked off. A pre-conference workshop was conducted on "Unions and the YMCA: Employee Free Choice Act"

Mike Aitken, Director of Governmental Affairs for the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Judy Barrett-Miller, Y-USA Government Affairs Specialist with experience with the Employee Free Choice Act in the state of Washington, and Rich Bland, Y-USA Director of Federal Relations offered a panel presentation on the subject.

Panelists forecasted that the Employee Free Choice Act would be introduced in Congress next week with bi-partisan support. This proposed legislation would amend the National Labor Relations Act ("Wagner Act") to change the procedures under which employees choose to join or not join a union. Aitken predicted an increase in union-friendly legislation as a major focus of organized labor, and increased collective bargaining activity, partly in response to the trend of declining union membership in recent years.
